Life Outside Sac State
My extracurricular activities mainly consist of shopping and eating, and Sacramento is a great place to do both.
My favorite place to eat near school is Tapa the World at J and 22nd Street. They have really yummy Spanish food, it’s not terribly expensive, and it’s open until midnight every night. Try their minty lemonade!
My favorite bar, Kasbah Lounge, is located next door. This is a great place to take a date- it is very beautiful and romantic. You don’t have to be over 21 to go in. They have weird but tasty cocktails, Moroccan appetizers, and the best tea that I have ever had in my life. They are open until 3 AM everyday.
If you’re not into anything too exotic, Tres Hermanas has excellent Mexican food on K and 24th.
When I’m not stuffing my face, I like to wander down J Street and go to all of the boutiques. I don’t remember what any of them are called, but there are tons of them all within walking distance of each other.
For movies, I like the IMAX because I am a dork and like to watch movies about deep sea creatures. The Crest Theatre also has random independent films that are usually a lot better than what standard theatres are playing.
What I’ve done, what you can do, and why it is important
It has not been easy for me to juggle working and going to school full time, but I still have felt that it is important to make time for other activities at Sac State. The first thing I did to get involved was to run for office in the student government. I ran for the position of Director of Business, and my campaign consumed every last minute of my spare time! It was stressful, but it was also extremely rewarding. It was a lot of fun, I met some great people, and I learned a lot about the school government. The experience also allowed me to develop my public speaking skills and it made me a much more confident communicator.
Another activity that I am currently involved in is the Business Ambassador Program. Although I just started, I am already realizing how gratifying it is to help other students. I know how terrifying starting college is, and I hope that as an Ambassador I can help students ease into college with the least amount of pain and suffering!
My advice to students is to get involved as early on as possible. Start small if you don’t have a lot of free time, like joining a club within your major. Always look at the flyers posted on bulletin boards for information about clubs and other activities. Subscribe to the BizList so that you are aware of upcoming events in the Business college. Don’t over-extend yourself, but if you have some spare time, try to fill it with fun and rewarding activities. They will help you learn more about yourself (and it always looks nice on a resume!).
What I wish I Knew- Advice for new Business students
I wish I had known earlier about the BizList! Before I subscribed to the BizList, I rarely knew about any events that were going on in the business college. I was completely disconnected with other people in my major. I simply went to class, and then went home. BizList was my first step in becoming more involved in the school. Once I subscribed, I started becoming more aware of all that the college had to offer. For example, I got help with my resume and had a mock interview in the Career Center. I attended the Internship fair and an MBA information session. All of these events have helped me learn to make the best out of my time in college, and how to prepare for a career after I graduate.
Another thing I wish I knew was not to rush through college! Once you’re done, no one cares if it took you 4 years or 7 years to graduate! I made the mistake of cramming too many classes at once because I wanted to graduate as soon as possible. My busy school and work schedule left no time for extracurricular activities. I was over-stressed, and more importantly, I was missing out on the ‘college experience.’ There are so many fun things to do and interesting people to meet at Sac State, and I was missing out on all of it.
My advice to new business students is to relax! Don’t take on too much at once, and make time for activities that you actually enjoy doing. Also, stay connected with the business college, because it is there to help you be successful.
